I guess what bothers me most is how sometime in the last century we stopped looking at the universe to figure out what it was trying to tell us, and started looking at it for proof of what we think it should be saying.
If Einstein hadn’t abandoned his universe at Hubble’s observation of redshift. If we hadn’t abandoned the notion of a gravitational force in favor of inertial motion. If we aren’t trying to abandon determinism for an indeterminate magic, we may well interpret these observations in a very different way.
I believe it would be inherently more scientific to imagine all possible solutions to the observations we make and eliminate them one by one rather than ignore them outright because we believe an individual observation validates our preconceived notions.
